Texas has one of the lowest young voter rates in the nation, but some hope that the rediscovery of an old law will change that.

 

According to a 2014 study by Politifact, only one-third of eligible voters in Texas under the age of 30 voted in the 2012 presidential election. To fight this issue, Austin Independent School District used Senate Bill 142 to implement voter registration programs in all AISD high schools.

When Sarah’s friend collapsed onto the floor of a Sixth Street club, she carefully carried her friend’s body into the bathroom, hoisted her on top of a toilet, splashed water on her face, and waited for her friend to regain consciousness.

 

She never called 911.

 

Sarah and her friend’s drinking habits reflect the larger trend of binge drinking on college campuses, which university officials attempt to combat by educating students.

Hope is defined as an emotion, not a fashion statement, but one University of Texas at Austin alumnus transformed hope into something that can actually be worn.

 

Oliver Shuttlesworth is the founder and CEO of Esperos, a backpack company based in Austin that derives its name from the Spanish verb ‘esperar’ which means ‘to hope.’ The company operates on a socially conscious business model, where 10 percent of the profit made from each backpack goes toward funding a child’s education in a developing country.

Bhakta said students who wanted to bring their culture to UT founded the team in 2003. In this photo story, I capture the movement and beauty of their culture, which they preserve through dance.
